Alaska's Biggest Pests

I knew that Alaska would not be the picturesque postcard place that tourists claim to be so wonderful. Enhancing my critical thinking skills is a skill that I have had to strengthen all of my life. I was, and still can be, a pretty gullible person who can outweigh the probability of a happy outcome versus a more realistic expectation without even breaking a sweat. And boy oh boy, has the Alaskan Tourism Board pulled one over on me.

Sure Alaska has a temperate summer climate, mountains, and coasts that rival any within the borders of the western States of the United States. But it also has the WORST mosquitoes that I have ever experienced. Apparently, Alaskan's claim the mosquito as their unofficial state bird because of the large hoards that gather in the summer, and yet, this well kept secret remains elusive to many in the Lower 48. Until now. I want as many of my friends and family to come visit me while I am here in Alaska as possible, so I need y'all to come with your eyes fully wide open to these menaces to my society.

According to Alaska Trekker, the two types of
mosquitoes that have been the most common carrier for the West Nile Virus have not found their way up north, so there is little worry about contracting this disease. Nevertheless, you will want to be prepared with a mosquito repellent if you plan your trip around June and July. Seriously, mosquito repellent has become my perfume for the past few weeks ever since I attempted to camp by the Yukon River with a couple of friends. I had never seen a swarm as thick as the one that instantly surrounded me the moment I left the confines of our vehicle.  It was midnight by the time we arrived at the Yukon, so you will just have to trust my word as a native born Houstonian that it was a massive swarm.

Fortunately, I was not the driver of our vehicle, and we were able to find a less saturated spot near Birch Creek. After I doused myself in repellent, I was able to finally enjoy a nice quiet Saturday enjoying the beginning of summer.
